DTC for Gina B Ahrens: Backgrounds, August 2017
Well, I'm writing offline again because as of today I still have not made my website Live. I'm close....
I’m here to share what my thought process was while working on this months DTC for Gina B Ahrens.
Each month we have a few words, or a theme that is supposed to challenge us. We are supposed to create some sort of art project using any of Gina’s supplies and yet stay within the boundaries of the prompt.
BUT, Gina always encourages us to “think outside the box” and “do our own thing” which is awesome because I don’t work really well with too many restrictions!
Let me take you through my process for this month. As you can see it was Backgrounds and I thought, Piece O Cake, I mean, how could I not come up with something? Easy peasy right? There's a bunch of ways to use her stamps and stencils on a background… but then I had a conversation with my sister, Laraine Centineo, and all that went out the window.
My sister is an experimental artist and she comes up with some really crazy ideas that I love. She works in an abstract way where as I am more traditional, I guess you could say.
Laraine has been working on backgrounds, so seriously, the prompt is backgrounds and well, I’ve been watching my sister use this technique thing that she does (Laraine's Video Link) One thing leads to another and we decided she was going to make me some of these “thingy’s” she’s been playing with and mail them to me.
Fast forward: They are here and it’s time to film my challenge.
You ever have an idea and when you start working on it the whole thing just isn’t happening for a million reasons? Yup, that was my day. My original idea was to paint a canvas background and then apply these thingy’s Laraine made that I painted ahead of time, then stamp and stencil Gina’s words on top of them. All in an abstract form.
As the project morphed into what it was to become, I had to stand back and let it happen, and it was NOT what was originally in my brain. Do you have trouble letting go of an idea?
Thank goodness Gina says “Do your own thing” or I would have been in trouble! LOL
I am about to share my process and thoughts with you and I hope you enjoy it!
